Rika is the youngest bear we detected. She is just 2.5 years old and weighs 55 kg. She was very quiet and sweet, that is why the dose of anesthetic we used to place her radiocollar was very small. She was found in spring 2007 in the area of Gorgiani. Due to her age, she is the most shy as far as her movement is concerned, covering an area of just 5.2 sq.Km.
Polimilos is the youngest male bear that wore a radiocollar. He is a young bear, which was found slightly injured by a moving vehicle in the junction of Polimilos on Egnatia Road in August 2007. He was provided with the necessary first aids, we placed a radiocollar and he was set free. He is 1.5 years old and he weighs 50 Kg.
His efforts to liberate his 247 kilos by biting the special steel wire that was holding him by his leg, until the narcosis used for the placement of the radiocollar to start, was the reason for giving him the name Koutalianos. He is the largest of the 30 bears that were radiomarked in Greece since 1997. At his 17, he is now old (bears live up to 25) and his territory till the end of spring for mate search was 197 sq.Km.
Tetradaktilos (Fourfingered) was detected in a wheat field near the forest of Gorgiani area in spring 2007. His name was given because he misses one finger from his front foot. He is around 7-8 years old and weighs 183 Kg. He proved to like sleep a lot after the narcosis. His territory was one of the largest, 205 sq. Km.
Kassiopi has just fallen asleep after the narcosis. She wore her radiocollar in autumn 2007. We have detected her moving in a vine field, in the valley of Venetikos river, in a night that the constellation of Kassiopi was dominating in the sky. It is estimated that she is 12- 14 years old and weighs 148 Kg. She is the largest female bear that was ever radiomarked till today.
Stratigos (General) was detected in spring 2007 near a field in the area of Gorgiani. He took his name by Kostas, an inhabitant of Kipourio (that has also the nickname General), because the field he was found in is his. He is 8 years old, weighs 137 Kg and he woke up quite angry after the narcosis, screaming loudly! Faithful to his den, he didn’t move a lot, covering an area of only 49 sq. Km.
Ion was eating corn during dawn near Venetikos river, without taking into account (due to hunger) the noise coming from one of the many construction sites that operate in the area for the construction of Egnatia Road. He weighs 220 Kg and he is 7-8 years old.
Katerina was detected near a stream of Venetikos. We gave her the name of the vet and also friend of Callisto for her precious support. She is 5 years old and weighs 91 Kg. She has traversed the area, where Egnatia Road is constructed, just a few times as she prefers more quiet corners of the forest. Callisto’s vet is controlling her heart bits just before she wakes up.
Pacino, even though he has no relation to Al, has a quite similar scar on his face, probably due to a strong fight with other large males for a female assertion. We detected him and placed a radiocollar in early spring, near a field in the area of Gorgiani. Even though he is a quite big (210 Kg) and experienced bear (16 years old) he moved in a relatively small area (35.4 sq. Km).
Tobias was also detected in autumn 2007 in the area of Stavropotamos, near a corn field, the autumn delicacy for many bears. He is 10 years old and he is quite big (he weighs 214 Kg.). He was given the name of the youngest son of our vet. He is very sensitive to noise and he takes his precautions every time he is about to move.
Aleka is estimated to be 5 years old and she also likes walnuts. She was detected in the area of Monaxitio in a walnut forest. She took her name by the member of the team that bought her radiocollar. She is the smallest, due to her age, and weighs 92 Kg. In one of her autumn itinerancies she decided to reach central Zagori, covering in a few hours 30 Km!
